Emergency Information
In orthodontics, there are very few true emergencies. However, it is important to call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment if you break or loosen any of your appliances. This will allow us to schedule the appropriate amount of time to repair any appliances that may have broken. Below are a few examples of situations that may occur and some solutions.
Tooth pain and soreness
After the initial placement of your braces and after routine adjustments,
one
might experience some pain or soreness. This is expected and is a result of
tooth movement. If pain persists, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-aspirin pain
relievers can be taken.
If there is still concern, please contact our office.
Poking wires
Sometimes wires may stick into your cheek or irritate your gums.
In instances
like this, a
pencil eraser can effectively bend the wire and remedy this
situation.
Also, a rolled up piece of cotton, or the wax provided by our office
can be placed over the wire.
As a last resort, the wire can be cut with a nail
clipper.
Broken or loose braces
During treatment braces may become loose. Usually they will remain secured to
the wire. Similarly, if a band (silver ring on the molar teeth) becomes loose,
it too will remain on the wire. If either a band or brace comes off the wire,
save it and call our office immediately so we can
schedule a repair appointment.
Lost separators
Separators that are placed in between teeth may fall out.
If this occurs, please
contact our office to see if it needs to be replaced.
